Asia

Two
year old Asia arrived from Kansas in
March, 2005 with a leg injury that was
two months old. The bone (at the hock
joint) in her right rear leg had been
broken. This was a serious break as
that bone was attached to many tendons,
ligaments, and muscles. The bone was
broken in half and was resting against
the larger bone in her leg, causing her
to carry her leg close to her body. Her
toes were curled under. She would only
put her leg down to balance herself when
she had to potty.
In March, Asia had orthopedic surgery.
Eleven weeks later, minor surgery was
performed to remove the plate and pins
that were causing wounds that would not
heal.
In
June, Asia sustained another "clean"
break (same leg), walking up two steps
onto a landing in her foster home.
Surgery was performed and this break
healed leaving her with two pins in her
leg. From not using her leg, her toes
were quite atrophied. She began
therapy, which included "warm
compresses" to increase the circulation
in her leg and "walking therapy" to
stretch and strengthen those tendons,
ligaments and muscles.
In
October, one pin started to protrude
from her leg after walking. We learned
that she had again broken her leg. The
following week, the second remaining pin
came out. X-rays show that her leg is
broken; but something (that cannot be
seen on the x-rays) holds her leg
together and she is able to walk three
miles, stand on her hind legs, climb
onto a futon, and manage two steps into
a house or onto a porch.
THANKS TO ALL of her supporters who
contributed towards her total medical
costs of $6,785.39. Today, Asia has a
living and workable limb! Hydrotherapy
treatments may aid in her recovering
further use of her leg. It could take
up to a year or more to see the full
extent of her recovery.
Asia is GORGEOUS (her photographs DO NOT
do her justice). She is a fawn brindle
female greyhound with a black mask that
weighs less than 60 pounds. She is VERY
OUTGOING, SOCIABLE and AFFECTIONATE.
She is a rather CALM and LAID BACK DOG.
She gets along well with cats, dogs and
children. She is argumentative (vocal)
with other dogs over beds and, when
laying next to her caregiver.
Asia
bonds instantly and, is crate-trained.
She NEEDS to be crated when you leave
OR, THERE WILL BE accidents in the
home. She is talkative, if crated when
people are present. She IS an escape
artist; but escapes to be with "HER
PEOPLE". Asia travels well in a van and
potties very well on leash. She ROOS!
She enjoys plush dog beds, soft squeaky
toys, "greenies", visitors, and
exploring new environments. She loves
walking in nice weather and picks up
sticks and bones; but allows you to take
them from her. She hates the cold
weather and needs a double-layer polar
fleece coat and would love a set of
pajamas and prefers to sleep under the
covers!
Asia
needs a special family that can accept
her physical limitations. One that will
not leave her (she WILL need to be
crated when you leave) for more than
four or five hours per day. A family
that will take her with them, whenever
possible. She needs a family that will
understand the tenuous circumstance that
she is in and will do everything they
can to prevent her from re-injuring her
leg. This means walking her on lead,
not allowing her to run off lead in a
yard, and not allowing her to attempt a
flight of stairs, and not requiring her
to jump in/out of vehicles or onto
furniture.

Asia has found
her forever home. A special thanks to all who sponsored her medical
