A "small" dog, is a dog that is less than 1/2 the size of a greyhound, which includes all toy breeds, whippets, terriers and various other types of dogs. A sheltie, bull terrier, springer spaniel are not considered small, and usually don't generate the kind of response a little dog like a Maltese or Pomeranian would in a greyhound.
Greyhounds listed on our website as small dog safe have been exposed to small dogs with favorable results. Most that are listed as small dog safe are living with small dog(s) successfully in their foster homes and it is anticipated that they will be fine with similar types of dogs in an adoptive home. This does NOT guarantee that a greyhound listed as "small dog safe" will be able to live with EVERY small dog, the personality of the greyhound, and the other dog come into play when deciding if the greyhound selected is the right one for your home.
In order to provide the best opportunity for a successful placement, GEM uses a 2 step adoption process when placing greyhounds into adoptive homes with small dogs.
First, the Adopter (after having a home visit and being approved to adopt) will be encouraged to visit the available greyhounds in their foster homes. This gives the adoptive family an opportunity to meet the greyhound in an environment it is used to and spend time getting to know his/her personality, while also gaining access to the foster family's knowledge of the his/her personality.
Once a greyhound is selected, he/she will be brought to adoptive home and introduced to the resident small dog(s) by an experienced person. For more information about this process please feel free to contact Helen at: CadillacWild@aol.com for assistance.
