Greyhounds are affectionate, friendly and intelligent dogs who thrive on attention and human companionship. Raised with their littermates, where they competed for affection, greyhounds love becoming the center of attention as household pets. Greyhounds do not usually make good watchdogs. Their friendly nature is not really very threatening. Adoptions of GEM Greyhounds are made with the understanding that the dog will become a house pet. Greyhounds, like people, have many personalities. The following questions help us match greyhounds with people and pets. You are welcome to expand on any area or provide additional information on separate pages. This application, if approved, will become part of the Adoption Agreement.

Adopting a greyhound is a lifetime commitment. The greyhound can be expected to live in excess of 12 years. To ensure the safety and health of the greyhound, the following "Adoption Requirements" must be complied with explicitly. Please do not consider adoption if you will not be able to meet this lifetime commitment or adhere to these requirements. Please also consider the financial responsibility in adopting a greyhound this responsibility does not end with the Adoption Fee of $225.00. While greyhounds tend to be a pretty healthy breed, there are veterinary costs associated with caring for any dog.

ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Required Reading - Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cythia Branigan (ISBN 0-87605-193-X)
  2. Additional Required Reading for those with young children - Child Proofing Your Dog by Brian Killcommons (ISBN 0-446-67016-2)
  3. It is vital to keep your greyhound on leash whenever it is outdoors, unless it is in a fenced-in area. NEVER "trust" it not to run away.
  4. You must keep a collar bearing identification on your greyhound at all times.
  5. If your greyhound should become lost, you are REQUIRED to notify GEM immediately.
  6. If you should ever decide you cannot keep or do not want your greyhound, you must notify GEM before taking any action. You may not give your greyhound to anyone else without GEM's consent and you must agree never to take it to a "pound" or other humane shelter.
  7. You must agree to keep your greyhound as a pet and never attempt to use it for pari-mutuel racing or laboratory research.
  8. GEM will have performed the following medical procedures for your greyhound: DHLPP, Rabies, Bortadella and Corona vaccinations, spay or neuter, Heart Worm test, teeth cleaning, polishing and any needed extractions, and worming. Your responsibilities will include maintaining regular vaccinations and veterinary care whenever they are required.
  9. Your greyhound's racing career is over and can never be reactivated.
  10. GEM is a nonprofit, entirely volunteer-run organization funded primarily by donations. There are many expenses associated with the rescue and placement of each greyhound. The  adoption fee of $225.00 helps to cover the costs of the medical procedures described in #8 as well as transportation to Michigan. Your greyhound will be provided with a muzzle and martingale collar and matching leash at no charge.
The adoption donation and additional fee for medical procedures are non-refundable.
  11. Adoptions of GEM greyhounds are made with the understanding that each dog will be a house pet.

I / We have read and agree to abide by the nine Adoption Requirements. If I / We qualify and receive a greyhound from GEM, I / We will accept full responsibility for the greyhound.

I / We also understand that to complete the processing of this application, a representative of the adoption program will schedule a visit to our home to assist us in matching the needs of a greyhound with the needs of our household. By submitting this application, I / We agree to such a scheduled visit and confirm that all members of the household will attend the home visit. I / We certify that all information provided on this application is true and correct.  I understand that I may be asked to sign a printed copy of this application before receiving a greyhound.

This application will not be accepted unless completely filled out!   Thank You!
